Background

Become a MEMBER of the Association

The Hepburn Renewable Energy Association Inc. is made up of volunteers dedicated to the promotion of local sustainability options.
HREA believes it is essential for communities to take responsibility for their own needs and make a local contribution to reducing impact on the envrionment.
The Association began when a small group of local residents got together to discuss how we could make a that contribution. The new committee was voted in at the last AGM in 2007.

The Committee is made up of

Jane Knight, President

Maureen Corbett, Treasurer

Maureen Corbett has been passionate about the earth and her relationship to it her whole life. She has resided in Hepburn Springs for many years where she lives on a 2 acre permaculture property. Maureen “walks the talk” living simply and self sufficiently, growing her own food, recycling and reusing wherever possible. Her values are reflected in her paid work also. She ran a partnership with Kerry Wise called Solar Sisters educating the public about energy efficient housing mainly through house tours and currently she works as a House Energy Rater and consultant on sustainable building practices. She uses her skills and knowledge to support her clients to find ways to reduce their consumption of our precious resources and benefit economically from switching to more sustainable options.Maureen is a well-known local community activist who will take a stand for the issues she believes in and many of these issues are linked to the earth and depletion of its resources.Maureen can contribute a wealth of knowledge to HREA about affordable sustainable living and has extensive community connections to draw upon.

Anneke Deutsche - Secretary

Anneke Deutsch moved to the Hepburn region 17 years ago. She has degrees in Fine Art-Sculpture as well as in Applied Science-Prosthetics & Orthotics. She has worked as a sculptor, a Prosthetist at Ballarat Health Services; lecturer in prosthetics at LaTrobe University and as a prosthetic technician. She also recently enjoyed six months of aid work establishing a Prosthetics and Orthotics facility in Kiribati in the Central Pacific. Living on this collection of coral atolls which are only a couple of metres above sea level, she became acutely aware of the huge loss of cultures which would occur as a result of a rise in sea levels. She has worked for the last 10 years on measures to reduce her household’s CO2 emissions by installing a 1.8kW grid connected photo voltaic system, a solar hot water/wet back system, building vegetable gardens and making biodiesel for transport from used vegetable oil. She now wants to spend some energy working on a community level to achieve more widespread reductions in CO2 emissions.

Karen McAloon - Secretary

Originally from a dairy farm in Western Victoria, Karen moved from the city with her husband to raise their family in a country environment and to live lightly, simply and sustainably on the earth, growing one’s own food. You could say she’s a ‘tree-changer’ like many in our community. Her land is a vast 70 acres so she and her husband have quickly learnt how to live in balance with the bush, regenerating the native forest, providing habitat, and managing the forest with the risk of bushfires in mind.
Karen is very involved in her community, she is an educator and facilitator, who has worked with people from many different walks of life. She particularly cares about those who find themselves marginalised in the community. Having two small children, a sense of community is important so they feel part of an extended ‘family’. Before the children came along Karen travelled extensively overseas and around Australia. Karen has just completed the leadership course with Fabian Dattner with the involvement of Hepburn Shire and Sustainability Victoria. Karen wants sustainability to become mainstream and hopes that through HREA she can help to show that there are many easy ways to help the planet.
